Although this was made last semester, exploration of method and material in this piece led to me experiment more with charcoal as a way to translate the themes of erasure and visibility.

Early sketches thinking about reframing the black female image, highlight and shadow. inspired by a piece made last semester where I explored similar themes.

Further exploration into charcoal, using liquid charcoal and layering it like water colour. I liked how I was able to see the screen printed text below, whilst it was hard to read the words disappeared and reappeared as if embedded in parts of the subjects skin.

Experimenting with the body and projected image, trying to visualise the concept of the 'body of the diaspora' expanding on ideas from Judith Carney's 'In the Shadow of Slavery'.

My first large scale screen print test for the vertical gallery commission. The image was printed on cotton which shrunk after the process of dyeing. I also found the material too heavy to capture the movement of a flag. I attempted to use batik resist methods during the dyeing process but it wasn't successful. This led to me exploring the method further for my next attempt.
